**UPDATED WITH WINNERS**
Hello friends, in the bleak days prior to February sweeps the networks are in rerun mode. Thank God for cable and awards shows. Here’s our recommendations for tonight, Sunday January 30, 2011.
Tonight the SAG’s go out, I wonder if they’ll follow the Directors and Producers in awarding the big one to The King’s Speech, which as good as it was did not have the best ensemble cast (in my humble opinion it belongs to the Social Network or the Fighter) Buuuuuut..
IT’S ALSO A TV AWARD SHOW!!!
Here are the TV categories for tonight, which I totally copied and pasted from Wikipedia. (and my predictions):
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
- Steve Buscemi – Boardwalk Empire
- Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad
- Michael C. Hall – Dexter
- Jon Hamm – Mad Men
- Hugh Laurie – House
Will Win & Should Win: Both Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston have never won an Actor. It could go to either way and I wouldn’t begrudge it a second. However, the AMC stars could split the vote to allow for a Buscemi victory, he’s due.
**WINNER: Buscemi took it. It’s cool. Boardwalk Empire is an actor’s series.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
- Glenn Close – Damages
- Mariska Hargitay – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
- Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife
- Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men
- Kyra Sedgwick – The Closer
Will & Should Win: Julianna Margulies. Fine, Good Wife is my crack, but unless Moss or the always unpredictable Sedgwick (she’s been nominated the last SIX years in a row without a win) pull off an upset, seeing as Margulies won last year. But I still see it going to Margulies.
**WINNER: NAILED IT! Margulies takes her second for The Good Wife, her fourth overall.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
Will Win: Mad Men. Look for the crew of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce to collect their third Actor in a row. But The Good Wife is a dark horse to watch out for which brings me to…Should Win: The Good Wife. 2010 was a standout year for the lawyers of Lockhart, Gardner & Bond and they deserve to be rewarded
**WINNER: Whoa way off, I guess Boardwalk Empire really is an actor’s series. It claims it’s first of probably of many future trophies.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
- Alec Baldwin – 30 Rock
- Ty Burrell – Modern Family
- Steve Carell – The Office
- Chris Colfer – Glee
- Ed O’Neill – Modern Family
Will Win: Alec Baldwin has won this award four years in a row. Four. I’m inclined to say it’ll go his way again, but he’s never been up against a Modern cast member. Should Win: Ed O’Neill is perfect as the Modern patriarch. He’s can go from bitter to hilarious to touching and it’s always strong. Colfer is out of his league with a category of leads to contend with.
**WINNER: Nailed it again. Good ol’ reliable Baldwin.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
- Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
- Tina Fey – 30 Rock
- Jane Lynch – Glee
- Sofia Vergara – Modern Family
- Betty White – Hot in Cleveland
Will Win: The unstoppable Jane Lynch seems the likely winner and the one to put an end to Tina Fey’s winning streak (the last three years in a row) but I wouldn’t count out another three time winner, Edie Falco who collected three in the drama category as Carmella Soprano. Should Win: Honestly, Tina Fey‘s work has been so strong this year in my mind she deserves her fourth in a row.
**WINNER: Wow. The actors union votes to give Betty White her first comedy actor award. Why not?
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
Will & Should Win: I feel like Modern Family has this one in the bag. Glee, The Office and 30 Rock have all won this and Hot in Cleveland’s nomination is it’s award.
**WINNER: Damn right Modern Family wins. Nolan Gould’s suit is beyond adorable.
Al Pacino and Claire Danes are all but guaranteed Actors for their portrayals of Jack Kevorkian and Temple Grandin, respectively in the TV movie and miniseries categories.
NEW SCRIPTED FARE!!!!
Californication 9:00 – Roman Polanski = Hank Moody. Just saying.
Episodes 9:30 – Waning in my affections. Sean and Bev retrieve Matt from a seedy bar. Sounds hilarious (he types wishing he could express deadpan)
Shameless 10:00 – Casey. Casden.
Big Love – I love me some Mary Kay Place, and she has been on fire this season. Hehe.
Oh and.. if you must indulge your NeNe, The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s third season finale airs tonight on Bravo at 10.
Well thats it for tonight. What are you’re SAG predictions?
