Good day everyone! HBO joins the game tonight as original episodes of Big Love return. Sunday’s are great again – the only thing that could make sunday’s better would be and AMC original series (their next is The Killing starring Big Love cast member Mirelle Enos who played Kathy and Jodeen Marquart). On top of that FOX, ABC and Showtime have a slew of new episodes on tonight, here are our recommendations for tonight, Sunday January 16, 2011.
American Dad “Fart-Break Hotel” 7:30 on FOX
American Dad makes the move to 7:30 with an episode titled – Fart-Break Hotel. On the episode title alone I’m sold. Yup that’s all it takes to win me over – a clever fart pun.
The Golden Globe Awards 8:00 – 11:00 on NBC
The most meaningless awards in Film & Television. I couldn’t care less about the whims of 91 foreign journalists (yes, if they write one article for an online publication, they count) – that being said – sometimes they are good for a larf or two.
Big Love “Winter” 9:00 0n HBO
Son of a bee-sting, the Henricksons are back. They may only be back for a 10 episode final season, but they’re back. I’m feeling very optimistic about the fifth and final season, Big Love has once proved it’s greatness and it has all the materials to be great this last final season – it’s a matter of having a streamlined plot and focusing on the characters we’ve grown to love. The fourth season was not a complete disaster – The performances were top notch, especially Sevigny and Goodwin. The plots were fairly interesting when they weren’t too convoluted – I was very interested in JJ’s inbreeding plot. I think the producers struggled to find a suitable way to fill the void left by the death of Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton), and divided the villainy between Alby, JJ and Marilyn Densham – and as much as I enjoyed Zeljko Ivanek hamming it up as JJ and Spacek’s careful and tricky densham – none of the plots had enough juice. It also seemed like the Henricksons were getting prodded on all sides – they just couldn’t catch a break, it was a bummer and people don’t want to watch bummer TV, just check out the ratings for FX’s Light’s Out. But like I said earlier I’m optimistic that knowing it’s their final season, the producers will give us A+ material. Here are the promos!
Shameless “Frank the Plank” 10:00 on Showtime
I was way more impressed with Showtime’s take on the UK hit than I expected to be. Emmy Rossum was particularly good as the eldest daughter Fiona, I like how they never rely on her beauty, in fact they grunge her up. Even in her club gear she’s still a million years away from the Rossum seen on the red carpet. The jury’s still out on Macy & Cusack, The pilot focused on Rossum’s Fiona so I haven’t seen enough of them to know if they’re phoning it in. I’ll let the promo for tonight speak for itself.
On a jam packed night like this, it’s hard to go wrong (that doesn’t mean you can’t – I’m looking at you Brothers & Sisters) here’s the rest:
The Simpsons 8:00 on FOX – The blurb for tonight’s episode features the names Smithers, Moe and Skinner and NO mentions of the Simpsons themselves. Colour me excited!
Bob’s Burgers 8:30 on FOX – More screwball sitcom (a la Arrested Development) than traditional animated series. Kristen Schaal is especially good.
Family Guy 9:00 on FOX – I’m not a McFarlane hater, I think Family Guy had found a nice groove. Tonight, Lois befriends a news anchor who does a story on her.
Desperate Housewives 9:00 on ABC – Tonight’s episode in which Lynette tries to get her mother (guest star Polly Bergen) to leave her abrasive boyfriend (guest star Larry Hagman, JR from Dallas). Sounds lame but hopefully there will be some more Paul stuff.
Californication 9:00 on Showtime – Guest star Rob Lowe is playing an actor who is up for the role of Hank Moody in the movie-within-a-series Fucking and Punching. Hank also tries to repair his relationship with his daughter.
Undercover Boss 9:00 on CBS – Some construction mogul goes undercover.
Cleveland Show 9:30 on FOX – Whereas American Dad and Family Guy have found nice rhythm, Cleveland has not. It is just a black Family Guy? It has nothing that sets it apart from the others. It’s ultimately bland – but so was American Dad in its second season. Tonight the kids from Glee guest voice. I’ll post their clip so you don’t have to watch the whole episode.
Episodes 9:30 on Showtime – The pilot last week was anything but perfect. I hope tonight’s more Matt LeBlanc infused episode is better.
CSI:Miami 10:00 on CBS – Come for Horatio, stay for … um… huh. I guess I don’t know why you stay…
The Real Housewives of Atlanta 10:00 on BRAVO – Nene is on The Celebrity Apprentice this year. So is Gary Busey.
Brothers & Sisters 10:00 on ABC – Tommy (Balthazar Getty) makes a rare appearance tonight, which focuses on his new girlfriend rubbing the family the wrong way when all she wants to talk about is Walker family history. Lame.
My DVR is gonna be mad busy tonight, what’re you watching?
