What’s On: Sunday

Vacation is over (Happy New Year btw) – time to get back to the grind, there’s been a little fresh TV before now but not too much; the best of which was probably last week’s episodes of Cougar Town, Castle (Laura Prepon as Nikki Heat was Brilliant! and it brought out the best in Beckett and Castle) and Grey’s Anatomy (V’s season 2 premier tried a little to hard to be good – Never tease Tyler’s death again! ) Tonight has a wide load of new TV and a few notable premiers to boot, her are our recommendations for tonight, Sunday January 9, 2011.

The Best:

Series (and Season) Premiers!

Bob’s Burgers “Human Flesh” 8:30 on FOX

A new animated offering from Loren Bouchard (Dr. Katz and Home Movies) and H. Jon Benjamin (Coach McGuirk from Home movies, but also Archer! and Carl on Family Guy) about a family run burger joint. If you were a fan of Home Movies this should be right up your alley (early word is that it’s good!) but if you’re expecting typical McFarlane-esque animation you wont find it here.

The Cape “Pilot” & “Tarot” 9:00 – 11:00 on NBC

After it’s 2 hour premier tonight, The Cape, NBC’s new superhero drama, assumes Heroes old slot on mondays. The Cape is about a Vince Faraday (played by ER’s David Lyons), a cop framed for a series of crimes by an evil mastermind named Chess played by James Frain (psychotic Franklin Mott on True Blood). It co-stars Summer Glau (Firefly, Terminator: TSCC) as an investigative blogger who aids Vince in his fight against the city and Vinnie Jones (Juggernaut in X-Men 3) as a serpentine criminal named Scales. Looks very run of the mill but it could be fun.

Californication “Exile on Main Street” 9:00 on Showtime

It’s been over a year since Californication’s been fresh, and it’s about time. The last two seasons were wildly uneven, despite an amazing performance from Duchovny. I’ve seen the season’s first two episodes and it seems to be getting back on track, but only further viewing will tell. We last left Hank Moody as he was telling Karen the truth about Mia as he was about to get arrested for assaulting Mia’s boyfriend (James Frain again!)

Episodes “Episode 1” 9:30 on Showtime

Episodes is a new series from Friends creator David Crane. It’s about a pair of married British producers who are bringing their hit UK sitcom to the states and MUST cast Matt LeBlanc. The premise sounds a little flat, but it looks like it has potential and LeBlanc seems to be really on point. Check out the promo!

Shameless “Pilot” 10:00 on Showtime

How ironic is it that Showtime follows a series about a UK remake with… a UK remake! Shameless follows a rather shameless single father of 6 as he drinks and smokes himself stupid. William H. Macy stars alongside Joan Cusack and Emmy Rossum.

Those were just the premiers, and they were just the beginning, here’s the rest of what Sunday has to offer:

CSI:Miami 8:00 on CBS – David Arquette directs tonight’s episode.

The Simpsons 8:00 on FOX – Bart seeks the origin of a mysterious scar.

Desperate Housewives 9:00 on ABC – Susan’s mother and aunt (Leslie Ann Warren and Valerie Harper) come to visit but don’t really wanna get tested to be a kidney donor. Also… WHO SHOT PAUL YOUNG?

Family Guy 9:00 on FOX – Peter needs a kidney transplant too… what a weird theme of the night.

Undercover Boss 9:00 on CBS – A uniform manufacturer goes undercover.

The Cleveland Show 9:30 on FOX – Cleveland and Rollo get superclose and Cleveland Jr. gets super jealous.

Brothers & Sisters 10:00 on ABC – LAME LAME LAME!

Well that’s it for today, check back soon for recaps and reviews and the last few Best of 2010 lists!
